How to run the RSA test

The Repeated Sprint Ability test as the FIH umpire fitness guidelines describe it, and how RSA Test fits around it. Anyone can use the test; the rules and targets below are the FIH's. The same guide is in the app.

The course

Mark a start gate line and a finish gate line 40 m apart, and a start line 1.5 m before the start gate. The umpire lines up with the front foot on the start line and starts whenever they like once the tester says the gates are set. There is no beep and no reaction time: timing runs from the start gate to the finish gate.

Devices

  1. Put one device at each gate line, in portrait on a tripod, two to three metres to the side of the line, at about waist to chest height, looking straight across the line.
  2. On the finish device, turn on Personal Hotspot, open RSA Test and choose Finish gate. On the start device, join that hotspot, open RSA Test and choose Start gate. Both show Linked when they have found each other.
  3. Line the red line on each screen up with the line on the ground. Have the umpire stand on the line and drag the two cyan lines to cover them from waist to shoulders. Step out of view and tap relearn.
  4. The first time you use a pair of devices, run Calibrate: both devices on one line, facing the same way, and walk through five times. The app stores the offset between the two cameras and subtracts it from every sprint. Both devices run at the same frame rate.

Each sprint

  1. With the umpire on the start line, tap Gates set. The start gate arms.
  2. The umpire goes when ready. The start gate fires on the first body part across its line and arms the finish gate.
  3. The finish gate fires and the time is recorded against the panel target: pass at or under it, fail above it.
  4. Recovery counts down from 60 s while the umpire walks back. Set the gates again when they are on the start line.

Six sprints make a test. If exactly one fails, a seventh runs straight after the sixth. Two fails, out of six or seven, is a failed test. Zero fails after six is a pass.

When something goes wrong

A false start or a gate that fires on someone walking past: tap Void on that sprint and run it again with the same number. A start that fires but no finish: Cancel and set the gates again. If a gate is unusable, type a stopwatch time with Hand time; it is marked manual on the sheet.

Evidence

Each gate keeps a still of the frame it fired on, with the sprint, gate and time burned in. The finish device holds both stills for every sprint, the results sheet PDF with signature lines, and the session data, in a folder you can share from the Results screen. The FIH also requires the whole test to be filmed, showing the witness and the lines, and kept for six months; use a third phone or camera for that.
